Abstract

Hosting a sporting event that attracts large crowds will increase the number of visitors to an area. This will also boost the tourism, restaurant, and lodging sectors, which in turn will boost the local economy. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview and analysis of the impact of sporting events on tourism in the city of Bandung. A survey was conducted to gather information regarding the impact of sporting events on the tourism sector and the economy in the city of Bandung. A total of 145 respondents, consisting of athletes, parents of athletes, spectators, committee members, and sports professionals, agreed to complete a public observation questionnaire regarding the implementation of sporting events in the city of Bandung. The analysis shows that three types of tourism expenditure— cost of staying at a hotel, cost of meals in restaurants, and cost of visiting tourist attractions— have a positive and significant correlation. The strongest relationship was between food costs and tourist attraction costs (r = 0.776), indicating interrelated consumption patterns. Tourism promotion through sporting events can also encourage local development, community cohesion, and position a region in the tourism market. Government support in the form of policies and sponsorship is key to the success of sporting events. © 2025 by the authors.
