This study is an ex post facto study, aimed at revealing the level of geometric thinking ability (LGTA) and exploring the geometric thinking process of first-year students of the Mathematics Education Study Program. The subjects of this study were 128 students who were about to start the Geometry of Planes and Space course. The research instrument was a standard test developed by [1] to determine LGTA based on Van Hiele's theory. To find out the students' thinking process, observations were made on the students' answer sheets and further interviewed several students. The results of the study showed that the students' LGTA was still low. This is due to the experience of learning geometry that does not pay attention to their learning needs. Among the factors that have not been explored so far are those related to content preparation. © 2026 Author(s).
