The city of Sawahlunto in West Sumatra, Indonesia, has transformed from a former coal mine to a cultural tourism destination, but environmental and economic sustainability challenges remain. This research aims to evaluate mining tourism practices in Sawahlunto and identify strategies to improve sustainability and economic diversification in the city. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The research findings show that Sawahlunto has successfully preserved its mining heritage through various initiatives such as Goedang Ransoem Museum (Public Kitchen Museum), Mining Tunnel Mbah Soero, and Railway Museum. However, significant challenges remain, particularly related to the need for more holistic ecological restoration and economic diversification. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing.
