Problem-solving behaviour of junior high school students in solving HOT problems

Abstract

This research aims to describe the problem-solving behaviour of junior high school student in solve higher order thinking questions. It discusses the problem-solving behaviour of junior high school students in solving debates which are classified as HOTS problems. One hundred thirty-nine junior high school students from 5 junior high schools were involved as research subjects. Each student was given a HOTS question. The students were also interviewed with open questions about the results of their answers. The student answer sheets, and, the results of the interviews were transcribed then grouped according to the rubric categories of the mathematical problem solving. The results of this study, show that the junior hight school students on average behave naively and routinely in solving HOTS problems. Naive students are students who solve HOT questions quickly and incorrectly. Routine students are students who solve problems in a structure manner without being able to developed their own solving strategies. It was found that there were many things that influenced students' problem-solving behaviour in solving problems such as student backgrounds, teacher professionalism in problem solving, and learning materials used by students. © 2023 Author(s).
