Synthesis of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) from natural silica using sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the optimum conditions for the synthesis of sodium silicate from natural silica. Sodium silicate is a silicate compound that is widely used as a basic material in various industries. Characterization of the resulting sodium silicate was carried out using FTIR, XRD and SEM instruments. The basic material for the synthesis of sodium silicate is natural silica. Natural silica is activated first using 1 M HCl. Then the activated natural silica is reacted with NaOH to form sodium silicate. Characterization using XRF showed that the synthesis of sodium silicate was more effective at high temperatures. Determination of the optimum conditions for silica synthesis was carried out at a concentration of 4 M NaOH with variations in melting time (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 minutes), as well as variations in melting temperature (300, 400, 500 and 600°C). Based on the research that has been done, the optimum condition for the synthesis of sodium silicate is the addition of 4 M NaOH concentration with a melting temperature of 400°C for 30 minutes. © 2023 Author(s).
