Research can be concluded by describing the types of criticizing strategies in the presidential and vice-presidential candidate debates in the 2019 presidential election. First, there are five types of direct criticism strategies found in this study, namely (a) negative evaluation, (b) expressions of disagreement, (c) statements about problems, (d) statements about difficulties, and (e) consequences. Second, there are nine types of indirect criticizing strategies, namely (a) improvement, (b) showing standards, (c) orders for changes, (d) requests for changes, (e) advice on changes, (f) suggestions for changes. (g) expressions of disbelief, (h) asking/presuming, (i) other cues. This type of research is qualitative using mixed methods. These research data are speeches that contain criticism in the debates of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2019 presidential election. The research results obtained in the criticizing strategy used in the presidential and vice-presidential debates in the 2019 presidential election amounted to 192 critical data, namely (1) direct criticism strategies amounted to 79 data, and (2) indirect criticism strategies amounted to 116 data. Based on these findings, it can be seen that the criticizing strategy that presidential and vice-presidential candidates widely use for the 2019 presidential election is an indirect criticizing strategy, which is 59.48%. Then followed by a direct criticism strategy, which is 40.51%. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
