In the field of education, critical thinking is extremely important. It motivates college to be able to examine, evaluate, and come up with solutions to challenges they encounter in school or in their daily life. The purpose of this study is to discover how students use critical thinking to construct reading comprehension questions, as well as the problems they face when using critical thinking to construct reading questions and the causes they face when using critical thinking to construct reading questions. The participants of this research are students who took Language Assessment course at the fifth semester in 2021. The data were collected through the documents of students’ reading comprehension questions on Language Assessment course and interview. The interview was addressed to eight participants who were weak in critical thinking. The data demonstrate that the majority of the participants are not very good at critical thinking when it comes to developing reading comprehension questions. In constructing reading comprehension questions, lack of grammar and vocabulary became a difficulty. Furthermore, their problems with grammar and vocabulary were caused by a lack of practice and language competence. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
