In 21st century, learning language focuses not only on creating students’ skills but also on creating critical thinking, good communication, good collaboration, and being creative to survive in this global world. To achieve those aspects, curriculum 2013 provides an authentic assessment that reflects students’ real abilities, such as attitudes, knowledge, and skills. The 2013 curriculum emphasizes that teachers use authentic assessment to assess the process and results of teaching and learning activity. This research aimed to investigate the current problems in implementing authentic assessment for reading skills faced by the English teachers in Senior High Schools in West Sumatera. This study was qualitative research. This research involved ten English teachers who had used authentic assessment in the classroom. In collecting data, the researcher used interviewed. From the results of data analysis can be concluded that all English teachers in those schools already implemented authentic assessment. They faced several problems in implementing authentic assessment for reading skills, such as students’ lack of vocabulary, teachers’ lack of knowledge about authentic assessment and limit time allocation. This study is hoped to give beneficial information related to the implementation of authentic assessment for reading skills. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
