Abstract

A convenient method for simultaneously determining anionic constituents such as chlorate and perchlorate, and other six anions such as fluoride, chloride, nitrite, nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate in potentially explosive firecracker samples using high-end ion chromatography (HIC) is presented. The firecracker samples are commercially available from the local markets in North Maluku. The IC Anion PWXL as separation column with the suppressed conductivity detection system was used for all determinations in the method. Using 2.0 mM lithium hydroxide (LiOH) as the eluent and a 0.9 mL/min flow rate, the eight target anionic constituents could be eluted within 25 min. The calculated detection limits (LOD) for S/N=3 was 0.25-12.15 ppb (μg/L), while the coefficient correlation concerning the peak heights versus the concentration range is more linear, with r2 ≥ 0.99. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for peak height, peak area, and retention time are less than 4.09, 4.00, and 4.40, respectively. The method has been successfully applied to simultaneously determine eight anionic constituents in pre-blast and residue post-blast of firecracker samples known as potential explosives. © 2021 School of Engineering, Taylor's University.
