Abstract

Scientific writing is a crucial skill that should be developed in the 21st century. As an implication of that fact, students are required to produce scientific writing to graduate from several higher education levels. This research analyses scientific writing skills, especially in research proposal writing, of mathematics pre-service teachers based on the Research Skill Development (RSD) Framework. The RSD Framework was used by the students as guidance for them to write a scientific research proposal, and by that, the RSD framework was also used to assess the student's research proposal. The instruments utilised in this research were the RSD rubric and semi-structured interview guidelines. The research results revealed that the scientific writing skills score of mathematics pre-service teachers is at Level 3 or medium level where they can independent study at the closed-inquiry level with an average score of 84.17. However, they also experienced difficulties, especially in Chapters 1 and 3 of research proposal writing, and consider the find/generate and analyze/ synthesize as the fascinating facets of the RSD Framework. © 2026 Author(s).
