Abstract

The Air Manis Beach-Teluk Bayur access road is a vital transportation corridor frequently affected by landslides, highlighting the need for effective slope reinforcement. This study analyzes slope stability using the method of slices and explores the use of gabion structures as a reinforcement solution. Initial calculations showed that the slope is in an unstable condition, with a Factor of Safety (FS) below 1. To improve stability, gabions were arranged in four layers with a total height of 4 meters. Additionally, three gabion design types were evaluated based on key stability criteria, including bearing capacity, resistance to sliding, and overturning. Among them, Gabion Type 2 exhibited the most favorable performance due to its optimized geometry, featuring a wider base and lower center of gravity. Despite having the smallest volume, this configuration provided the greatest stability and material efficiency. These findings indicate that well-designed gabion structures can serve as a technically effective and cost-efficient solution for landslide mitigation, particularly in tropical environments with steep terrain and weak foundation soils. © 2006-2026 Asian Research Publishing Network (ARPN).
