Building maintenance is an ongoing activity carried out in order to guarantee the condition of the building remains in a good condition and functioning effectively. Therefore, building maintenance is imperative for a building with high maintenance demand such as hospital. A certain category of hospital has dual functions that are serving patient treatment and providing medical education. A preliminary study among the Indonesian hospitals indicates that the level of hospital building maintenance performance is poor. One of the main reason for the poor maintenance is lack of strategic planning for hospital building maintenance. The objectives of this paper are to describe the current issues of hospital building maintenance performance and to propose a framework for strategic planning in hospital building maintenance in the region of West Sumatera, Indonesia.
