Purpose – This study aims to investigate the key factors that shape memorable nature-based tourism experiences among Muslim tourists and examines place attachment and environmental concern as mediators of the relationship between memorable nature-based tourism experiences and Muslim tourist environmentally responsible behaviour. Design/methodology/approach – A structured survey was conducted among 402 Muslim tourists, using partial least squares structural equation model to analyse relationships among memorable nature-based tourism experience, place attachment, environmental concern and Muslim tourist environmentally responsible behaviour. Findings – First, dimensions such as satisfaction, co-creation and novelty are the key to shape memorable nature-based tourism experience. Second, memorable nature-based tourism experience has a significant direct effect to Muslim tourist environmentally responsible behaviour. Third, memorable nature-based tourism experience fosters Muslim tourist environmentally responsible behaviour primarily through place attachment, while environmental concern does not. Research limitations/implications – This study is limited to Muslim tourists in nature-based settings in West Java, which may affect the generalizability of findings to broader or more diverse populations. Further research could explore other variables, such as religiosity and cultural factors. Practical implications – Tourism practitioners can enhance sustainable tourism by designing experiences that foster emotional attachment to destinations and align with Islamic environmental values. Integrating eco-friendly practices into tourism offerings for Muslim tourists can support environmental preservation. Social implications – This study underscores the importance of promoting environmentally responsible tourism to build positive relationships between tourists and local communities, thus fostering cultural respect and environmental stewardship. Originality/value – This study contributes to responsible tourism research by examining the tourist environmentally responsible behaviour among Muslim tourists. It provides insights into how memorable nature-based tourism experience dimensions such as novelty, experiencescape, co-creation, intensification and satisfaction along with place attachment and environmental concern, shape responsible tourism. This approach enriches existing models by integrating religious, specifically within the growing halal tourism sector. © 2025 Emerald Publishing Limited
