Several studies have emphasized the importance of self-efficacy in scientific writing. One kind of scientific writing that should be completed by university students is a research proposal. This research proposal writing is a fundamental stage that determines students' success, either in academic life or in their future careers. Furthermore, this research aims to describe university students' self-efficacy in writing research proposals. It is essential to conduct this research since it will give an initial picture of students' self-efficacy in writing research proposals. The purposive sampling technique was utilised to determine the sample of this research. There are 21 students from the Mathematics Education study program at Universitas Negeri Padang who enrolled in the Research Methodology course in 2023. The data of this research was obtained from the scientific writing self-efficacy questionnaire. After that, the data were analysed quantitatively. The findings of this study reveal that the average of the students have good self-efficacy in writing the research proposal. All students are in the range of good and very good self-efficacy; more than 76% of students have good self-efficacy, and almost 24% of students have very good criteria, while there are no students who have bad and very bad criteria. However, one problem faced by most students is that they think that researching a topic is not easy. © 2025 Author(s).
